A Sports massage, as opposed to a deep tissue massage, is the manipulation of muscle (soft tissue) so as to prevent any injury. This is referred to as pre-hab! A sports massage can aid in recovering from an injury. This injury does not have to be as a result of sport – it can apply to almost any injury.
Deep Tissue Massage
As the name implies, this massage works on the deeper tissues / muscles of the body. As the tissues are deeper, pressure is adjusted accordingly to manipulates these deeper tissues. By its very nature this can be slightly more discomforting than a ‘normal’ sports massage.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage is a therapy that involves heating up smooth volcanic stone – in a glorified slow cooker !
The massage therapist will combine various techniques such as placing the hot stone and leaving them on certain points of your body and or use them in their hands and use the healthing benefits of the heat to soften and manipulate soft tissue.
Is a Sports Massage Painful ?
During a massage there may be some point when some discomfort and pain are felt. Largely depending on the nature of the sports injury or issue.
Your body may tense up in response to pain, making it harder for the therapist to reach deeper muscles.
There is usually some tenderness and possibly pain following a deep tissue massage.
